Shirley's Coffee Shop GM Reads to Third Grade Students

Reading opens up a child's creativity, encourages questions thereby cultivating inquisitiveness, makes the world smaller and places nearer, provides fuel to adventurous spirits and makes learning a lot more fun.

Shirley's Coffee Shop GM Susan Macario knows the value of reading, having enjoyed quiet moments with a book to read too, and she readily agreed when asked to read a book to the third grade students of San Antonio Elementary School in support of the school’s Community Readers Activity.

Held last April 12, this is to involve the community to come to San Antonio Elementary School to inspre the children to read more. This activity encourages the students not to give up reading as they grow older and utilize this skill whenever and wherever their future may take them.

Shirley's Coffee Shop Staff Surprises General Manager on her Birthday

The Shirley's Coffee Shop General Meeting at the Susupe outlet last October 6 started with a surprise birthday celebration for the restaurant's GM, Susan Macario. A sumptuous cake, a set of balloons and a birthday song surprised and greeted Susan on this day.

Some of the staff relates that Susan was very intuitive in catching surprises but this time, it was different. The staff narrates that they really caught Susan by surprise this time.

The staff was one in relaying a special message for Susan:

"To our beloved boss, happy happy birthday! Thank you for everything. We really appreciate all your hard work for Shirley's and the staff. May God bless you always and may you have more birthdays to come."

Shirley's Love Kids!

On March 30, 2009, Ladera International School of Saipan once again visited Shirley's Coffee Shop in Susupe fo another memorable trip. Joining the twenty five students were teachers Genevie Angeles and Christina Sakaziro from K4 to 1st grade classes.

The kids made a tour of the kitchen and dining area and witnessed how pancakes are being made by Shirley's Susupe's Chef Roding. They also took a glimpse of Shirley's "giant freezer" and the "giant washing machine" as the kids call it, which is actually a Hobart dishwashing machine.

After the tour, Shirley's management gave each kid a free plate of Kiddie Nuggets and Smiley Fries and a glass of fruit punch while watching their book project Charlotte's Web movie in a 50 inch television mounted at the dining area of the coffee shop.

And that's not all; a how to make a halo-halo dessert was demonstrated and shared to the kids for tasting. Asked one of the students again what was the dessert called, she answered "fruit shake". Kids, we really love them!

General Manager Susan Macario was so delighted with the students' eagerness to learn and explore the restaurant's world of operation. A trip that even the kids' parents would remember.

Shirley's Goes Smoke Free

Shirley’s Coffee Shop took their pro-environment stand to yet another level as they joined the campaign to promote cleaner and fresher air. Though Shirley’s believes in each individual’s right or freedom to smoke, it also believes that smoking is one freedom that should not encroach on other patrons’ freedom for cleaner air, too.

Beginning June 2008, Shirley’s adopted and supported the campaign against second-hand smoke by banning smoking in their premises.

Hesitant at first at how the smoking crowd will respond to the move, Shirley's General Manager Susan Macario conducted a survey among the loyal patrons, both smoking and non-smoking. Some patrons gave hints of opposition early on although much to her suprise, a lot of smokers also expressed that they would still be loyal patrons of Shirley's regardless of the ban, simply because of the good food.
A complete ban of smoking inside the coffee shop therfore was put to place. Considering their smoking patrons, they have provided an area outside the coffee shop facilities, to accomodate them.

True to Shirley’s advocacy, a cleaner air isn’t just a way to enjoy a truly relaxing ambient environment. Everything else at Shirley’s simply comes down to what a second home truly should be. With a place like Shirley’s where you can enjoy excellent food, a friendly staff atmosphere, a steaming cup of coffee, and with wisps of clean, fresh island air to go with your dining experience to boot, what would you not give? With all these, it’s definitely priceless!
